Where to Stay in Madrid: Consider Nightlife when Deciding
Madrid is a very compact city, and no matter what your favorite choice of activities or attractions, you’ll probably find you are in convenient reach of almost everything you wish to do during the day.
One thing to consider when you choose an area in Madrid for your vacation accommodations is the local nightlife scene. If you are traveling with children or prefer to get to sleep at a somewhat early hour (1 am in Madrid), you will want a quieter neighborhood. By contrast, nightowls will want to be close to where the action is all night long.
Many visitors choose a hotel in Madrid’s City Center, and there are several different areas to consider for accommodations here. The Austrias quarter contains the Plaza Mayor, which is a central hub of tourist activity and night time revelry in Madrid. There are many taverns and bars here to explore and enjoy by night, and by day you can see some of Madrid’s most beautiful churches in the Austrias quarter.

Puerta del Sol is a popular place to stay just to the east of the Plaza Mayor in Madrid’s center. It is equally busy at night, but in a slightly different way. There are many shops and departments stores to the north at Preciados and many bars and nighclubs in the Huertas district to the south.
Gran Via/Plaza de Espana is Madrid’s main street. It is lined with stores, businesses, and various corporate buildings. This is a popular place to stay that affords easy access to attractions and nightspots, but a slightly quieter scale of accommodations.
To the north of Gran Via is Chueca, an old and very atmospheric area with narrow streets and plenty of charm. This is the center of the gay scene in Madrid, and there are a variety of restaurants, bars and clubs in this area that are lively throughout the night.
These are just four areas in Madrid’s Center where you may consider staying during your visit. Other Center quarters plus peripheral areas provide more options.
There are many different types of hotel accommodations available in Madrid to suit your tastes in whatever area you choose to stay.
